Hats & Honorees Featured at May TeaMembers gathered for tea, hors d’oeuvres and chance to honor this year’s Presidential Distinguished Rank Awards Winning Women on a sunny day in May at the Arts Club of Washington. A good time was had by all. We toasted the 14 women for their strong leadership, ability to achieve results and consistently demonstrate strength and integrity in public service (see list below). Two of these distinguished leaders were honored in person, with orchid corsages: Laura J. Miller, Veterans Administration and Evelyn M. White, Health and Human Services. The Presidential Rank Awards are presented each year by the President to recognize and celebrate a small group of career Senior Executives for exceptional long-term accomplishments. For more information, visit www.opm.gov/ses/presrankaward.asp. On a lighter side many attendees wore hats to
participate in the EWG first Annual Best Hat Contest. Three finalists
were chosen. Based on audience applause, the winner was Kate Perry,
whose tiny red and black hat resembled a Ladybug. The winner and the
two finalists, Kathryn Hill wearing her elegant red hat and Barbara
Tozzi wearing a black hat that was worthy of the Queen Mum, each received
a gift. EWG President Marylouise Uhlig extended her heartiest wishes
for a good summer and looks forward to seeing you all in the Fall.

Nominating Committee Preparing BallotA committee of three dedicated members are preparing a slate of officers who will lead the organization into the new year. The committee, Lori Santamorena, Elaine Lyon-Johnson and Anna Fay Dixon, will present a slate to the membership for a vote including: President, President-Elect, Vice-President, Secretary and Treasurer. Serving on the board as an officer is just one way to be involved in the organization. We are also forming our committees and have many positions open. And according to Washington Post writer Mary Ellen Slayter, volunteering in professional associations is a solid career strategy. She recently focused on the advantages of professional membership in her Career Track column (June 27, 2004) and highlighted volunteering as a key way of maximizing your membership. She told readers “don’t be shy,” volunteer to help run registration at a meeting for example and you’ll meet lots of people. Slayter noted there is “no more efficient and reliable way to meet people in your field … as well as potential employers…” than through being active in an association. Status of Women – the heart of
EWG! Join this committee to get involved. 2004 Program Year Closes Strongly From its opening luncheon featuring FAA’s Linda
Schuessler at Finemonda’s in October to its closing May Tea at the
Arts Club, EWG brought an array of programs and networking opportunities
to members. The events drew over 400 members from nearly 90 agencies
to forge new friendships, make valuable contacts and learn. We offered
three luncheons with guest speakers, Linda M. Schuessler, Deputy Director
for Air Traffic, Federal Aviation Administration, Nancy Harvey Steorts,
author of Living Safely in a Dangerous World who served as
Consumer Product Safety Commission Chair, and Barbara Hackman Franklin,
former US Secretary of Commerce. We successfully tested a new concept,
a networking luncheon designed to bring people from difference agencies
together to talk about opportunities available in each agency. We
re-tooled our annual conference into a conference and training summit
which featured keynote speaker Senator Elizabeth Dole and drew nearly
130 people. The year included three additional networking
events that gave us an opportunity to meet Pentagon Memorial Architect
Julie Beckman and Rosemary Dillard, Vice President of the Pentagon
Memorial Fund, meet Austrian Ambassador Eva Nowotny, Ph.D along with
distinguished pianist Till Fellner and honor the Distinguished Presidential
Rank Award Winning Women. The 2005 Program year will begin in the
fall and will feature several educational and networking events, Holiday
High Tea in December, evening at an embassy, annual conference in
March and May Tea. Visit our website for program updates: www.execwomeningov.org. Members in the NewsJudith Baroody, a senior Foreign Service Officer in the State Department, has moved to Santiago, Chile, to become the Counselor for Public Affairs at the U.S. Embassy. Her work will include running the public affairs section, dealing with the press, and handling cultural programs and exchanges. Previous tours included Israel, Syria, Morocco and Cyprus. Led by EWG members Diane E. Gelburd and
Patty Lawrence, a team of 35 EWG and Senior Executive Association
members completed the Race for Cure on June 5, 2005. EWG has sponsored
a team for the past 5+ years and plans another effort in 2005. Watch
for details and come out to support research to find a cure for breast
cancer.
