Spotlight on Speakers:

Meet Michelle Rhee…Michelle serves as Chancellor of DC Public Schools leading a district with 50,000 students and 144 schools. In the Mayor’s search for a change agent for schools in the District, experts in education recommended Michelle, who had already transformed urban public school systems through her work with The New Teacher Project (TNTP). The New Teacher Project (TNTP) is now a nationally recognized leader in understanding and developing innovative solutions to the challenges of new teacher hiring. Her commitment to excellence in education began in a Baltimore classroom in 1992, as a Teach-for-America teacher. Michelle’s expertise on education is also informed by a Bachelor’s degree in Government from Cornell University, and a Master’s degree in Public Policy from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. Meet Elaine C. Kamarck… Elaine is a former senior White House policy advisor, author, researcher and lecturer in Public Policy at Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government. She served in the White House from 1993 to 1997, where she created and managed the Clinton administration's National Performance Review, also known as reinventing government. At the Kennedy School she served as Director of Visions of Governance for the Twenty-First Century and as Faculty Advisor to the Innovations in American Government Awards Program. She conducts research on American politics, 21st century government, and governmental reform and innovation and is author of The End of Government as We Know It. Elaine received her PhD in political science from the University of California at Berkley. Read her full bio.

Meet Karren LaLonde Alenier … Karren is author of five collections of poetry, including Looking for Divine Transportation (The Bunny and the Crocodile Press), winner of the 2002 Towson University Prize for Literature. Her poetry and fiction have been published in such magazines as: the Mississippi Review, Jewish Currents, and Poet Lore. Read her full bio.

Meet Michealene Cristini Risley … Michealene is a writer, director and founder of Fresh Water Spigot, a creative content company that focuses on creating content in a variety of forms of entertainment. In March of 2007, Michealene released her first co-authored book, “This Is Not The Life I Ordered,” a collection of stories, wisdom, and practical advice, written by four ordinary women who have faced extraordinary life challenges. On February 25, 2008, she is moderating a panel at the United Nations 52nd session of the commission on the Status of Women. Read her full bio.

In her presentation “This Is Not The Life I Ordered,” Michealene will share how the Kitchen Table Group she was a part of with the three other authors was essential in helping her work through the issues she has had to face in her life and why it is important for people to create a Kitchen Table Group for themselves. This book and this presentation is essential for all of us who are struggling with the countless issues we face in our lives, including work, family, and love, as well as the big questions of life and death. Meet Amy Walter...National Journal's HOTLINE Editor-in-Chief. "Every politician is always looking for that perfect sweet spot, that place where you can find the perfect balance." Amy Walter is one of the nation's top political forecasters. She has been successfully handicapping U.S. House races since she received The Washington Post's Crystal Ball award for her spot-on predictions in 2000. As editor in chief of The Hotline, the National Journal Group's online briefing on politics and policies, Amy Walter is the publication's primary voice.

Amy is widely known for giving frank yet genial interviews, which has gained her much airtime on the national television news circuit. Her astuteness and wit garner her choice platforms and friendly, interested discourse from colleagues with diverse political viewpoints. Meet Lynn Scarlett, EWG President … Lynn serves as Deputy Secretary of the Department of the Interior. She coordinates Interior's environmental policy initiatives to implement the President's executive order on cooperative conservation. She also co-chairs the President and First Lady's Preserve America initiative on historic preservation and heritage tourism. Read her full bio.

Meet Mary E. Peters … Secretary Peters was confirmed as the 15th Secretary of Transportation on September 30, 2006, after spending more than two decades crafting solutions to our nation's toughest transportation challenges. She brings a unique perspective to her role as the nation's transportation chief, having spent her career working on transportation issues in the private and public sectors, including leading both federal and state transportation agencies. This hands-on experience allows her to understand and appreciate the real-life aspects of planning, building and operating transportation systems on local, regional and state levels. Over her 20-plus years in transportation, Secretary Peters has earned a solid reputation as an innovative problem solver, a force for safety and a strong advocate for effective use of taxpayer dollars. Meet Courtney Lynch … Courtney has found success by living her life as a leader and today conducts with her partner inspiring Leadership Boot Camps a portion of which she’ll share with Summit attendees. Courtney draws on nine years of service as a Marine Corps officer, managing a top-notch sales team for Rational Software, and practicing law at one of the nation's leading law firms. She is co-author of "Leading From The Front: No-Excuse Leadership Tactics for Women" and recently was awarded the 2006 National Stevie Award for Best Female Entrepreneur, and BusinessWeek profiled her achievements as a leadership expert.
